Baking Sugar Cookie FAQ

How many cut out cookies can I make from one batch?

Yield will greatly depend on the size of the cookies you are making - but you will get about 3 dozen 3" cookies. You can halve this recipe for a smaller batch.

How do I keep cut out cookies from burning?

Use Mesh Cookie Baking Mats (link) or parchment on your baking sheets to keep your cookies from burning and spreading.

How long do I bake cut out cookies for?

Bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes, until cookies have just started to turn golden brown around the edges. For best results bake similar sized cookies on the same cookie sheet.

If I have 2 cookie sheets in the oven at once, I like to swap them halfway through, so they cook more evenly.

Should I turn on convection to bake my cookies?

I don't use my oven on convection as I find it cooks my cookies too fast and sometimes burns them. You may need to experiment with your oven for best results.

Where can I buy unique cookie cutters?

The Cookie Countess online store sells over 200 styles of cookie cutters for Christmas, Halloween, birthdays, baby showers, and more!

How do you store the cookies until you are ready to decorate them?

If you're only storing them for a day or two, an airtight container in the fridge will be fine. Any longer, and I'd recommend freezing them. You can read our blog article about How To Freeze & Defrost Sugar Cookies here.

I just came across your recipe while searching for a sugar cookie recipe that I can make with my 2 and 4 yr old granddaughters. Can we add colored sprinkles, sugar or crushed candy canes on top before baking?

The Cookie Countess replied:
Sure you can!

Hi there! I am going to give your recipe a try in the morning, but I have a question and I’m hoping you might be able to respond soon. I saw that this recipe doesn’t require chilling prior to cutting shapes, but I’m wondering what to do if I make the dough in my home in the morning and then need to take it to my sister’s house a little later? Should I refrigerate it until I’m ready to leave the house? My sister is less than 10 minutes away. Thank you so, so much! These sound delicious!!

The Cookie Countess replied:
Hi Susie! You don’t HAVE to chill this dough, but you absolutely can, so it would be totally fine to pop it in the fridge until you head to your sister’s house. Have fun!

Finally cookies that keep shape! Thank you for sharing this recipe. I started a girls cookie night for my family two years ago. Our sugar cookies were flat and thin. We tried multiple recipes. But this year they are perfect! Im so happy and excited for my family to see them. We can actually see the shape of our cutters. Merry Christmas!

Loved the flavor and the way these baked w/o spreading!

Hello can I make this dough ahead of time? If so, what are your recommendations? Thanks! First time trying the recipe

Hello, thank you for this recipe. It’s literally the first time my cut out cookies didn’t spread, over brown or taste bland. Thank you! Easy peasy!

How soft is “softened butter”?
Thank you!
———
The Cookie Countess replied:
If you leave your butter on the counter for 30-60 minutes at room temperature, that’s generally good enough. If your house is super hot or super cold, you may have to adjust that timing, obviously. The goal is to be able to push into the stick of butter and make an impression without having to put a ton of pressure.

I have been experimenting with different sugar cookie recipes and this was the best one yet! I threw away all the other recipes and this will be my go to recipe now. I already made the lemon cookies before and those were a big hit so I already knew these would be delicious. I like cookies that are a little crunchy, well a lot crunchy which was the blue ribbon for me.

This is my go to recipe. Everyone loves it!
Thanks!!

I made this sugar cookie recipe and it held its shape. But like all the other recipes I used they ended up getting hard. I want them to be soft enough that my customers don break their teeth trying to bit into one.
What am I doing wrong 😑
———
The Cookie Countess replied:
Hi Kathy. You could be overmixing your dough (you really want to mix just until everything is combined, once you start mixing the flour in), or overbaking the cookies themselves. I baked these minis at 350*F for 8 minutes and then let them cool on the cookie sheet (I normally let full size cookies bake for 10 minutes, but minis can get overbaked very quickly). I hope this helps!
