September Cutter Club - A Bite of Fall

A Bite of Fall: Sweet Apple Harvest Cookies

When I think of fall, I picture crisp air, cozy sweaters, and the smell of apples everywhere—from orchards and cider mills to the sticky-sweet delight of a caramel apple. That’s exactly where the inspiration for this cookie set came from. I wanted to capture all the magic of an apple harvest in cookie form, so I chose five designs that feel like a walk through the orchard: a caramel apple, a tractor, a basket of apples, an apple tree, and of course, a classic cider jug.

Each cookie tells a little story of fall on the farm. The caramel apple is a nod to county fairs and sticky fingers. The tractor and apple tree bring that rustic orchard vibe to life. The basket of apples feels like a fresh-picked harvest, and the cider jug ties it all together with a taste of tradition. Together, they make a set that feels both playful and nostalgic.

One of my favorite parts of creating this set was choosing the colors. Fall is such a rich season, filled with warm tones and earthy contrasts, and I wanted the cookies to reflect that. Every shade in this palette was chosen with the orchard theme in mind:

  • Red – The star of the show. Red instantly makes you think of crisp apples hanging from the tree or fresh from the basket. It’s the pop of color that brings energy and life to the set.
  • Green – A grounding color that balances the red. It reminds me of orchard leaves, tractor fields, and the last hints of summer before fall fully takes over.
  • Soft Yellow – This acts as the gentle highlight. It adds warmth and softness, like the glow of autumn sunlight or the label on a cider jug. It keeps the set from feeling too heavy.
  • Caramel – A sweet nod to caramel apples, this shade feels cozy and comforting. It adds that delicious “treat” factor to the set and pairs perfectly with the red and brown.
  • Brown – The foundation. Brown ties everything together—it’s the color of sturdy tree trunks, and farm soil. It makes the set feel rustic and authentic.

Together, these colors tell the story of harvest time. They echo the orchard, the farm, and the kitchen table—all the places where fall memories are made. They don’t just decorate the cookies; they set the scene.

Consistency makes all the difference when it comes to turning a cookie from “cute” to “wow.” For this set, I played with a mix of stiff, hybrid, and flood consistencies to create texture, depth, and clean finishes.

  • Stiff Consistency – I used this mainly for the apple basket, because I wanted it to look like real straw. To get that textured effect, I used an Ateco #46 tip, which gave me those perfect ridges and made the basket look sturdy and rustic—just like the ones you’d see at an orchard.
  • Stiffer Flood Consistency – For the apple tree, I went with a flood consistency that was a bit thicker than usual—not quite hybrid, but not fully runny either. This gave the tree canopy a smoother fill without being too flat. To make some dimension I first outlined the edge of the canopy and some curvy accents and after it dried I went and flooded. I also used this slightly thicker flood for the red apples and the brown trunk, which helped them hold their shape nicely while still drying with that soft, rounded finish.
  • Hybrid Consistency – This one was especially useful for the caramel apple. The caramel drip needed to look smooth but still have a little thickness to it, and hybrid was perfect for that. It gave the caramel that “sticky, just-poured” effect without running off the edge.

By combining these consistencies, the cookies gained both realism and dimension. The basket had texture, the tree had volume, and the caramel apple looked tempting enough to take a bite of. Each choice was intentional, and together they created a set that feels as cozy and detailed as a true fall harvest.

For a better understanding of icing consistencies refer to this blog here. We also have a very thorough online class here.

If you are comfortable cutting and piping/flooding with tipless bags, go for it! If you prefer tips I would recommend a #1 or #1.5 tip for details and outlines , and a #2 or 2.5 for flooding.

I used this beige marker for sketching out the sections and designs of the cookies. This is very helpful to keep everything straight and spatially correct. You can always use a mini projector to do this as well.

Below you will find step by step instructions for all the cookies. Followed by 2 videos. One for the Apples Basket and the other one for the Tree. Feel free to have fun! Use different colors, or different techniques. Let your creativity shine if you want!

Now let's decorate some cookies!

1. Caramel Apple

2. Cider Jug

3. Tractor

4.Apples Basket

5. Apple Tree

Have a Bite of Fall in Every Cookie

This set was such a fun way to celebrate the coziness of autumn. Every cookie felt like a little piece of the orchard—whether it was the shiny red apples, the rustic wooden basket, or the sticky-sweet caramel apple that practically begged to be eaten. By playing with colors that echo the harvest and icing consistencies that added both texture and depth, the set came together as a true bite of fall.

In the end, these cookies aren’t just decorated treats—they’re a way of capturing the season in sugar. And just like a trip to the orchard, they remind us that fall is about slowing down, savoring the sweetness, and enjoying the simple magic of the harvest.

I would love to hear what you think of this set and see your cookies! You can post a pic and leave a review on the product page. It makes me so happy to see your cookies when they are completed!!

Happy Baking!
