The Countess Flour Funnel™: What is it, and why do you have to have it? - The Cookie Countess

The Countess Flour Funnel™: What is it, and why do you have to have it?

Anyone who has ever had a stand mixer can probably attest what an absolute miracle worker that little countertop device can be. No more trying to juggle a bowl and hand mixer while simultaneously trying to add ingredients. No more kneading bread dough or trying to mix stiff cookie doughs by hand—hallelujah! And the companies that make these mixers also typically sell additional attachments to allow you do make any number of other tasks easier. Want to make homemade ice cream? They’ve got a special bowl for that. Want to peel and slice veggies? There’s an attachment for that. Want to roll and cut your own fettuccini? This may or may not come as a shock to you, but there’s an attachment for that!

But as the owner of several different stand mixers over the years, one of the things that is typically the same across all mixers is the way you feed dry ingredients into your bowl. Generally speaking, the neatest way to get everything in there is to either tilt the mixer head back or lower the bowl, depending on the style of mixer you have. This gives you the clearest access to the center of the bowl and minimizes the chance that you’ll accidentally spill flour or cake mix down the side of the bowl and onto your counter.

Now, don’t get me wrong—I am fully aware that KitchenAid and Cuisinart units (for example) come with a “pouring shield,” but I am here to tell you that the only thing I have found them good for is shielding the bowl from the ingredients I’m trying to add in there. They typically have narrow openings that don’t allow for good-sized scoops of dry ingredients to be added in at a time, resulting in accidentally spilling either on top of or around the shield itself. Not to mention their tendency to “dance” as the mixer is running: I’m constantly having to twist my pouring shield back into place so that it’s back in the right position. Well, cue our midnight Cookie Countess infomercial moment, where we cry “THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY!” But there really wasn’t one readily available on the market, so we decided to make one!

"Why didn’t someone come up with this years ago? Love how it locks into the mixer and you can leave it attached as you work! Fantastic item! You won’t regret this purchase!"

-Ricky, Burlington NJ

Enter the Countess Flour Funnel™! This handy device attaches to the front attachment port of your stand mixer instead of your bowl and makes keeping your workspace neat and tidy a breeze. Let’s take a look at some of the best things about this handy product:

  • The Countess Flour Funnel™ works with the existing attachment system of your stand mixer. If your stand mixer has a front port that holds attachments in place with a screw into the side of the attachment, then this product should work for you*.
  • Because the Countess Flour Funnel™ attaches to the mixer head instead of the bowl, you still have 360* access to the bowl itself. No need to remove a pouring shield in order to scrape down the sides of your bowl; the funnel is elevated out of the way already.
  • The Countess Flour Funnel™ has a large, wide opening perfect for accepting large scoops of dry ingredients (you can use it for wet of course too). Unlike standard pouring shields that work best when adding smallish spoonfuls of flour or sugar, you can easily add ingredients to the Countess Flour Funnel™ by the cupful.
  • Also unlike with standard pouring shields, which deposit the ingredients that do actually make it into the bowl along the side, the Countess Flour Funnel™ drops your dry ingredients right into the center of your bowl for the most even distribution.
  • Like so many things in our modern society, standard pouring shields work best for right-handed users. But what about the lefties, we say?! Well, the Countess Flour Funnel™ attaches to the front center of your mixer, so it is versatile and easy to use regardless of whether you are right- or left-handed.

*See product listing for any known models that this product does not fit.

Things to note:

  • The Countess Flour Funnel™ is not dishwasher safe. In its current version, this product is 3D printed from food-safe filament, but if it is exposed to high temperatures, it can warp or deform. We are working on a version of the Flour Funnel that can stand up to the dishwasher, but for now, the care and cleaning instructions are to wash with warm (not hot) water by hand.
  • Although the Countess Flour Funnel™ has been found to fit most stand mixers with a front attachment port, there are a few models out there that it just doesn’t fit—with so many versions of mixers out there, it was pretty much inevitable that there will be one or two that are just slightly different enough to keep it from working. We are currently developing one that will work with the KitchenAid Mini (right now, there is just not enough clearance between the funnel and the bowl), and we hope to have that available at some point in the future. In the meantime, if you purchase a Countess Flour Funnel™ and it does not fit your mixer, we ask that you send us a picture of the model label on your mixer, along with a video showing how the Funnel doesn’t fit properly, and we will give you your money back.

"I love this addition to my KitchenAid! And it’s durable, easy to use and actually keeps all my dry goods going into the bowl and not all over my counter top 10/10 love it!"

-Darlene, Clayton DE

One comment that we have heard more than a few times is “why should I spend money on this when my stand mixer already comes with the pouring shield, which does the exact same thing?” A great question that has a simple answer: it doesn’t do the exact same thing, as evidenced by the hundreds of comments and reviews by happy users. The Countess Flour Funnel™ solved an issue that many bakers had simply come to accept as normal, but now that they know there’s an alternative, there’s no going back to messy counters and spilled ingredients!

"Didn't know how much I needed this, but I definitely DO."
